History
The story of Marquees of India really begins in the mid 90’s when one of the partners spent a year in India and fell in love with the country. A festival business selling Indian chai was the result. In 1997 we acquired our first Indian marquee for use at festivals to house the chai shop. The tent attracted considerable attention and interest whenever it was put up. This led to the idea of starting an Indian marquee rental business.
In 2000 we made the first of many trips to India. On this first trip we spent 6 months working with traditional Rajasthani tent makers to produce a range of marquees and accessories for rental purposes. We attempted to combine the best aspects of old Rajasthani tent techniques with modern designs, fabrics and British made canopies to create unique but practical structures fit for a variety of different events. No matter how beautiful the tent, no one wants to be wet during a British rainstorm!
Soon after this first trip we started designing a new collection of block printed marquees, our Maharani range. In contrast to our original colourful appliquéd marquees, this collection uses subtle earthy colours over-printed with handmade block-prints.
We have a brand new range for 2019. Off-white is the predominant colour with gold printing and mirror work. Perfect for any occasion but especially with weddings in mind.
We continue to make regular trips to India and over time have built up close relations with our tent makers. This even includes being invited to family weddings! Let us bring some of the magic of this fascinating country to your event.
